The Statue of Liberty

One of the most famous statues in the world stands on an island in New York

Harbor. This statue is, of course, the Statue of Liberty. For Americans, it is the most

important symbol of their culture, since it is seen as a tribute to the most significant

event in history—US victory in the war of independence. The Statue of Liberty is a

woman who holds a torch up high. Visitors can go inside the statue. The statue is so

large that as many as twelve people can stand inside the torch. Many more people can

stand in other parts of the statue. The statue weighs 225 tons and is 301 feet tall.

The Statue of Liberty was put up in 1886. It was a gift to the United States from

the people of France. Over the years France and the United States had a special

relationship. In 1776 France helped the American colonies gain independence from

England. The French wanted to do something special for the U.S. centennial, its 100th

birthday.

Laboulaye was a well-known Frenchman who admired the United States. One

night at a dinner in his house, Laboulaye talked about the idea of a gift. Among

Laboulaye’s guests was the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Bartholdi

thought of a statue of liberty. He offered to design the statue. At the same time, he was

in love with a woman whom he had met in Canada. His mother could not approve of

her son's affection for a woman she had never met, but Bartholdi went ahead and

married his love in 1876. That same year Bartholdi had assembled the statue's right

arm and torch, and displayed them in Philadelphia. It is said that he had used his

wife's arm as the model, but felt her face was too beautiful for the statue. He needed

someone whose face represented suffering yet strength, someone more severe than

beautiful. He chose his mother. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on an island in

Upper New York Bay in 1886. It had his mother's face and his wife's body, but

Bartholdi called it "my daughter, Liberty".

Many people contributed in some way. The French people gave money for the

statue. Americans designed and built the pedestal for the statue to stand on. The

American people raised money to pay for the pedestal. The French engineer

Alexander Eiffel, who was famous for his Eiffel Tower in Paris, figured out how to

make the heavy statue stand.

In the years after the statue was put up, many immigrants came to the United

States through New York. As they entered New York Harbor, they saw the Statue of

Liberty holding up her torch. She symbolized a welcome to a land of freedom.

The Statue of Liberty

When we talk about New York, I believe what comes to over 50% of you may be the Statue of Liberty. So, what I will introduce to you is the giant figure, a famous symbol of American culture.

The statue is also called Liberty Enlightening the World. Now, it has been located in the New York Harbor for over a century. It is a gi

ft presented to America by France to commemorate the birth of the United States and cement the friendship between the French and American people in 1876.

There is some basic information. Liberty weighs 225 tons; its height is 46 meters and the height of its base is 45 meters. The woman figure holds a torch that can give orange light at night in her right hand, and in her left arm, she carries a book which means the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

Its father is Frederic Auguste Bartholdi(弗里德里克·奥古斯特·巴托尔迪), a French sculptor. It is said that the woman figure has his mother’s face and his wife’s body. It took him 10 years to complete the creation. However, the whole statue wasn't officially accepted on behalf of the American people until 1884, after which it was taken apart, crated up and shipped to New York. It was formally dedicated by President Cleveland(克里弗兰) on October 28, 1886. In fact, Liberty is more a huge building than a statue. Its base is a big hall in which you can watch movies about early life of immigrants. Besides, there are stairs of 171 steps inside the Liberty’s body. You can climb up it to the crown. It is said that 40 people can stand inside her head, and you can have a good view of the beautiful scenery of New York Harbor there.

The Liberty’s base was engraved with Emma Lazarus's (埃玛·娜莎罗其)poem of 14 lines, The New Colossus, which was written originally to raise funds for the statue's base. The poem is very popular, especially the last five lines, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" The Statue of Liberty is a member of the World Cultural Heritage. It’s also a reminder of American Dream. It symbolizes American high ideals of fighting for liberty, and also stand for American people’s pursuing the happy life.

篇三:The Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty

Good morning everyone, My name is Amy. As for New York, what hits me firstly is the Statue of Liberty. Let’s have a look.

Liberty Enlightening the World, known commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is located in Liberty Island of New York Bay. As a gift France presented to America for celebrating 100th anniversary of Independence it is created by French sculptor Bartholdi with his mother and wife as the model in 1876. The statue acts as a beautiful girl of ancient Greek, which makes a impression of kindness and warm on visitors, but it is a big size girl, which is up to 46 meters in height, even reaches 93 meters including the base and weighs 225 tons. And it is hollow inside so that visitors can take the elevator to her head and go to the museum that records the immigration history of America in the base.

In 1984, it is rated in the World Heritage List, which stems from not only its beauty and magnitude but also its significance.

The statue of Liberty is dressed in a robe of ancient Greece style, holding torch highly with the right hand, which is rooted in story of Prometheus, God of Freedom in Greek myth that he was tied by a never broken chain on a steep cliff due to stealing kindling for human to complete civilization in the end. However, the broken handcuffs, leg chains at her feet, and the Declaration of Independence in her left hand represent freedom and breaking the constraints of tyranny. And the statue of Liberty wears a radiant crown, of which seven tip awns stand for seven continents. Her lip appears to say "Give me your tired your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" which is impressed in the base.

In a word, the statue of liberty is the symbol of America and the symbol of freedom and democracy.

That’s all, let’s welcome my partner Lily.
