1956年，毛泽东发出了绿化祖国、实现大地园林化的号召。中国开始了12年绿化运动，目标是在12年内，基本上消灭荒地荒山，在一切宅旁、村旁、路旁、水旁，以及荒地荒山上，即在一切可能的地方，均要按规格种起树来，实行绿化。
1979年2月，在邓小平提议下，五届全国人大常委会第六次会议通过了将3月12日定为我国植树节的决议，这项决议的意义在于动员全国各族人民积极植树造林，加快绿化祖国和各项林业建设的步伐。

1990年3月12日，邮电部又发行了一套4枚绿化祖国邮票，第一枚为全民义务植树。
近代最早设立植树节的是美国的内布拉斯加州。1872年4月10日，莫顿在内布拉斯加州园林协会举行的一次会议上，提出了设立重视节的建议。该州采纳了莫顿的建议，把4月10日定为该州的植树节，并于1932年发行世界上首枚植树节邮票，画面为两个儿童在植树。
据联合国统计，现在世界上已有50多个国家设立了植树节。由于各国国情和地理位置不同，植树节在各国的称呼和时间也不相同，如日本称为树木节和绿化周;以色列称树木的新年日;缅甸称为植树月;南斯拉夫称为植树周;冰岛称为学生植树日;印度称为全国植树节;法国称为全国树木日;加拿大称为森林周。
